Best Air Purifiers for Smoke Review 2020

It is essential to identify what type of smoke you need the air purifier for. You might intend to use it for a domestic or commercial space. Is it for cigarette or cigar smoke of a family member in the house or wildfires? Where cooking smoke, even for weed smoke when you got to get rid of the smell.

Check the volatile organic compounds (VOC) in your neighborhood. Regions with lots of traffic or close to an industrial area often have a high VOC level. It affects the air you breathe and over a long period is detrimental to your health.
Determine the size of the area you want to filter. Measure the density of smoke produced in an area. It might be from cigarettes, wildfire or cooking. Also how fast that smoke needs to be cleared. The CADR scores of each air purifier will be a clear indicator for this.
These factors will dictate which air purifier is best suitable for your needs and be capable of delivering the best results.

Key Features to look out for when buying an Air Purifier

  • Our checklist includes when choosing an air purifier.

    – Price range: It depends on how much you want to invest in a suitable air purifier

    –  Filtration system: The different types of filters or other air purification systems used in an air purifier.

    –  Filter replacement indicator: Some air purifiers have indicators which notify you when you need to replace the filter specifically for the HEPA filter as it cannot be cleaned and reused.

    –  Air quality indicator: Some air purifiers have indicators which notify you of the air quality.

    – Noise level: Air purifiers have different motor speeds which could get noisy especially if you want in on during the night whilst sleeping and something you should take into consideration.  Measured in decibels.

    – Coverage area: It is the square feet for air an air purifier can effectively filter

    – Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR): Indicates the number of  tobacco smoke, pollen and dust an air purifier can remove in a certain area.  Tests performed by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM).

Cubic feet per minute (CFM) : How many cubic feet per minute this air purifier can filter  this measures the air purification efficiency of the air purifier.

    – Fan Speeds: This gives you the ability to s time to filter the air for example when there is cigarette smoke in the air and you want to get rid of the odor. Turn down the speed for when you sleeping and want the noise level as low as possible.

IQAir HealthPro 250 Design and Features

The IQAir HealthPro 250 comes with a simple but effective design. The modular design is somewhat bland, but it does make it easier to replace filters. The exterior of the device is made up with ABS plastic with air filters stacked together. There is the PreMax filter at the bottom, then the motor fan, then the V5-Cell filter, and then the HyperHEPA filter on top.

It’s a bit on the bulky side weighing in at around 16kgs. That makes it difficult to move around, but it does have wheels and a handle that help with this. The machine is held together by two clamps on either side of the purifier. One of the clamps has a small display and the buttons used to operate the device.

Given that the air purifier uses a HEPA filter, it can be expected to absorb and eliminate up to 99.97% of particles of 0.3 microns or more. To give you an example of how small that is, 1 micron would be the size of around 1/100th the width of a human hair.

As mentioned earlier, the purifier features a modular design with three air filters built in. The first filter at the bottom is an F8 PreMax Filter. The air passes through this filter first and large particles are removed before passing on to the other filters.

The second filter is the V5-Cell MG filter. Don’t let the complicated name throw you off. This is basically IQAir’s answer to the activated carbon filter usually seen with these air purifiers. The V5-Cell is a MultiGas filter that has a 2.5kg mixture of activated carbon and impregnated alumina to eliminate odors. This mixture makes it more powerful than the average activated carbon filter.

Finally, there’s the hospital-grade Class H12/H13 HEPA filter. Filters of this quality are used in the most demanding places like hospitals. They are extremely efficient and can remove even the tiniest particles. The filter comes equipped with the proprietary HyperHEPA technology. The company say that their advanced filter can catch particles all the way down to 0.003 microns.

The IQAir HealthPro 250 air purifier is a powerful device that delivers on all the claims it makes. While it does come with an expensive price tag compared to other purifiers, it delivers value for money given how powerful it is. If you have breathing problems or allergies and want to get relief, then this could be an excellent choice. It eliminates pollutants, irritants, and allergens to ensure you breathe nothing but clean and pure air.

  • Rabbit Air MinusA2 Review

    Rabbit Air MinusA2

    Air Purifier

    Rabbit Air MinusA2

This is an air purifier that is a contender for the best purifier of 2019. Rabbit Air is a trusted brand of over a decade, and the MinusA2 is an air purifier that has a practically perfect filtration system, has a plethora of smart features, and is easily a high-end machine.
There are 3 variants of the MinusA2 – SPA-700a, which covers up to 700 square feet; SPA-780A, and SPA-780N, both of which cover up to 815 square feet, but the second one comes with Wi-Fi. Each variant is solidly built, as it’s made out of metal, and it has an LED panel that shows if it’s on or off.

It has a simple and sleek design, and it’s only 7 inches in-depth, so you can easily save space by mounting it up on a wall. The MinusA2 has a six-stage filtration process, which means it’ll work wonders for eliminating spores, allergens, and improving the overall air quality. Its filters eliminate both smaller and larger particles, as one of them is a true HEPA filter, and you can even customize the filters if you want to focus on specific particles.

One important feature of every air purifier is the ACH, which is air changes per hour. The MinusA2 can change the air in the room up to 4 times, which is recommended for people with severe allergies, while it’s recommended 2 times per hour for those without. That means you can set your purifier to change the air every 15 minutes, and with favorable CADR scores, this makes the MinusA2 a very potent purifier.

  • Winix 5500-2 Review

    Winix 5500-2

    Air Purifier

The Winix 5500-2 is one of the best air purifiers to come from the Korean company Winix. It comes with a great design.

The filter has a plastic body and is available in a luxurious black color.

This sets it apart from the previous generation Winix 5300-2.

Given that air purifiers have to be kept plugged in all day for best results, it’s better to make them from plastic rather than metal. Don’t worry about the build quality though. Winix choose the best materials and the best manufacturing process for the job.

    Winix 5500-2 Features & Specifications

Filtration System 4 Stage:Pre-filter, Carbon filter, True HEPA filter, PlasmaWave Technology
    Item Dimensions 23.6 x 14.9 x 7.8  inches
    Coverage Area sq ft  360
    Air Quality Indicator  Yes
    Filter Replacement Indicator  Yes
Noise Levels in dB  27.8 – 54.8 dB
Fan Speeds  4 –  Quite, Medium, High, Turbo
    Power Consumption  6- 65 W

    CADR Scores

    Dust: 243
    Smoke: 232
    Pollen: 246
    246 CFM
    Warranty  1  Year
    Pros Cons

    – 1 /4 /8 hour timer
    – Plasmawave
    – Auto adjust mode
    – Quiet on lower settings
    – Smart sensors
    – Remote control

    – Highest setting can get loud
    – 1 Year Warranty

    Winix 5500-2 Design

The front of the filter features five function buttons. These buttons are much easier to press than with the previous Winix WAC9500.

The Winix also comes with an LED smart sensor that has three different colors.
The different colors correspond to different levels of air quality, so the light lets you know what the quality of air is like in the room at the time.
There is also an intake grill on the front of the filter. This is where the air passes through ready to be filtered.

    Winix 5500-2 Filters

Winix always uses the latest technology with their products and the 5500-2 is no exception. The filter uses a 4-stage air purification process that combines all of the best of Winix technology to keep the air in your home clean. Sadly, it doesn’t have the same range of filters as the Winix WAC9500, but you can still expect a pre-filter, a true HEPA filter, and the Winix PlasmaWave filter.

The pre-filter helps to capture large contaminant particles including pet dander, pet hair, pollen, and dust. This pre-filter can be removed and washed and reused for quite some time.

    Activated Carbon Filter
The Washable Advanced Odor Control (AOCTM) Carbon Filter carbon remove odors as well as protect against VOCs.

    True HEPA Filter
As mentioned before, a true HEPA filter captures 99.97% of all particles down to 0.3 microns. This includes allergens, pollen, mold, virus particles, and fungi particles, and dust. They also help with odors including smoke odors, mold odors, and the smells of cooking. The true HEPA filter can’t be washed and has to be replaced on a regular basis.

    Winix PlasmaWave

The PlasmaWave is a kind of ionizer. Ionizers improve the effectiveness of these filters and eliminates more contaminants. It can be turned off and on as you need it.

    Winix 5500-2 Extra Features

The Winix 5500-2 has been around for a while now so there’s not much in the way of extra features. Similar to other air filters from the Winix brand, it comes with a great Smart Sensor that detects the current air quality. This feature adjusts the fan speed according to real-time data on air quality to save energy. Running a filter all the time is great for your allergies, but not so much for your energy bills.

The air purifier also comes with a remote control for ease of use. It’s not a massive feature, but it’s sure to be appreciated by some users.
It also comes with an LED life indicator that tracks the air filter health.

It alerts you to when it is time to get a new filter for the purifier

  • Blueair Classic 480i Review

    Blueair Classic 480i

    Air Purifier

    Blueair Classic 480i

Anyone can benefit from having an air purifier in their homes.
The Classic 480i has the option for a particle filter or for their Smokestop filter filtering up to 99.97% of harmful particles and (VOCs) volatile organic compounds. With it’s advanced HEPA filter with the electrostatic and mechanical filtration system. It boasts multiple functions such as: on/off function, fan speed, child lock, indoor and outdoor air quality with recommendations on the air filtration required,  with its wifi connected mobile app.
Let’s take a look at what sets this air purifier apart with our Blueair Classic 480i review.

Blueair Classic 480i Features & Specifications

Filtration System 2 Stage:  HEPA filter and Carbon filter
    Item Dimensions 23 x 20 x 11 inches
    Coverage Area sq ft  434
    Air Quality Indicator  Yes
    Filter Replacement Indicator  Yes
Noise Levels in dB  32 -52 dB
    Fan Speeds  1, 2, 3
    Power Consumption  15 – 90 W
    CADR Scores

    Dust: 300
    Smoke: 280
    Pollen: 300
    5 air changes per hour
    Warranty  1-5 Years
    Pros Cons
    – Smart mobile app features
    – Remote control  via mobile app
    – Timer control  via mobile app
    – Wi-Fi enabled
    – High asking price
    – Bulky
    – Noisy on high settings

    Blueair Classic 480i Design

The Blueair Classic 480i features a similar design to earlier models from Blueair, such as the Classic 405. It’s 23 inches high and 20 inches wide, which puts it in the medium-size category. The purifier features an air grill on either side. It’s just as welcome here as it was with the 405. The design optimizes the air flow through the purifier and makes the machine as a whole more efficient.
One thing that does set the Blueair Classic 480i apart from the previous models is the new digital control panel. This includes a button for the auto smart sensor mode as well as two indicators that show the levels of VOC and PM 2.5 in the room.
The air purifier is made from a durable steel and the bulky design means it weighs in at around 33lbs. It can become difficult to move it around because of this. The good news is that there is the option to have caster wheels installed on the purifier. It makes the Blueair Classic 480i much more mobile.

    Blueair Classic 480i Filters

The only way to properly assess the quality and ability of an air purifier is to look at the quality of the air filters. The amount of types of air filters is also important. This machine ranks among the best for the quality of the air filters used.
The main filter is the particle filter. This filter uses a true HEPA filter to capture up to 99.97% of allergens including dust, pollen, pet dander, bacteria, and viruses down to just 0.1 microns. If you need something extra, then you can purchase the SmokeStop filter. This filter is a combination of the True HEPA filter and an Activated Carbon Filter. Activated Carbon filters pull odors and gasses out of the air to leave your home smelling better.
Like other Blueair air purifiers, the Classic 480i uses the proprietary HEPASilent technology. This technology helps to prevent clogging and prevent particles from being released back into the atmosphere. It uses electrostatic cling to charge particles before releasing them, eliminating up to 99.97% of microns from 0.1 microns.

The Classic 480i is a fine upgrade to the older Classic 405. It has improved sensors and improved filters. If you don’t have an older Classic, or indeed any kind of air purifier at all, then this would be an excellent choice. It’s got everything you need for pure and clean air.

  • Honeywell HPA300 Review

    Honeywell HPA 300

    Air Purifier

    Honeywell HPA 300

If you’re looking for a good quality brand-name air purifier then you’ll likely run into the name Honeywell at some point. They are one of the biggest names in the business, and the Honeywell HPA 300 is another fine example of how they earned that top spot.
The Honeywell HPA300 is a solid air purifier if you’re looking for something to help with allergies and asthma. It does have a few flaws – such as the lack of smart features and the potential noise issue – but it’s still an excellent choice.
Honeywell is one of the most trusted names in the industry, and air purifiers like the Honeywell HPA300 showcase why that is. An American company

Honeywell HPA 300 Features & Specifications

    – Amazing fan power
    – 5 Year limited warranty
    – Control panel lighting adjusting  bright, dim, off
    – Highest setting can get loud
    – Sometimes gives off a bad smell
    – No remote

    Honeywell HPA300 Design

If you’ve seen one Honeywell air purifier you’ve likely seen them all. Honeywell settled on their signature design quite some time ago. It would be nice to get some variety but if it ain’t broke don’t fox it. It comes with a metal body design complete with rounded edges and a full-body intake that absorbs air from a full 360 degrees. The Honeywell HPA 300 is sturdy and has a large fan built in.

The air purifier is controlled from the top with buttons, similar to other air purifiers. It has two LED indicators that let you know when it’s time to replace the HEPA filter and the pre-filter. There’s an outlet grill too, which is another common feature with air purifiers.

The air purifier is built with handles on each side to carry it. It weighs in at around 21 pounds, putting it on the heavier side of things. It can be difficult to move it between rooms. It’s also 22 inches high and 21 inches wide, making it too big for a small room. There’s a lot of great choices out there for small room air purifiers, but this isn’t one of them.

    Honeywell HPA300 Filters

The Honeywell HPA300 features a powerful air purifier powered by a True HEPA filter. This is hardly a surprise for an air purifier in this price range, but what is surprising is the top quality of the filters. Here’s how it breaks down.

The pre-filter has a built-in activated carbon filter. This helps I to eliminate VOCs, odors, and gasses – as well as trap large particles. The downside is that it needs to be replaced regularly, at least once every three months. These replacements can be expensive too, which is another knock against the air purifier.

    Activated carbon Filter

Activated carbon pre-filter  which absorbs VOCs/Gases/Odors and traps larger particles.

    True HEPA Filter

A true HEPA filter is the heart of every good air purifier. This filter can capture up to 99.97% of all particles as small as 0.3 microns. This includes mold, bacteria, pollen, viruses, and pet dander. To give you an idea of how small 0.3 microns is, 1 micron is equal to 1/100th the width of a human hair. This air purifier removes just about everything from the air to leave behind nothing but pure and clean air.

Honeywell have always understood the value of a true HEPA filter and have included them in all of their air filters. What sets this one apart is the technology that helps to power it and ensure that it performs at its peak. The True HEPA filter included here is far more powerful than any other purifier in this price range.

    Honeywell HPA300 Room Coverage

The Honeywell HPA300 is designed for large rooms. It offers up to 465 square feet of room coverage. This is a particularly large amount of coverage, especially compared to the competition. Many other air purifiers in this price range struggle to cover even half of that. Honeywell have always made air purifiers that can cover the most room. For example, the Honeywell 50250 is able to cover 390 square feet.

    Honeywell HPA300 Extra Features

One thing that is clearly missing from this model is a smart sensor. It’s something that Honeywell generally reserves for their newer and more modern devices. There’s only basic settings to be found here. You can set it to a timer for 2 hours, 4 hours, and 8 hours. It comes with three fan modes built in too; Allergen, Germ, and General Clean.

One extra feature that the purifier does have is a turbo mode. This mode can be used for fast and effective cleaning in a hurry. Just take note that this sets the fan to the maximum possible level. It can make a lot of noise and use up a lot of power. Only use this setting if allergens get out of control.

There’s also a light dimmer setting built into the air purifier. Last but not least is the electronic filter replacement reminders. The sensors track the quality of the air filter and remind you when it’s time to buy a replacement. Pretty handy to have given that a filter can last for up to three months.

    Honeywell HPA300 Sound

It’s worth bringing attention to the sound generated by the air purifier because it is one of the more disappointing aspects of it. With such a powerful fan behind it, it was obvious that this was going to generate more noise than the average air purifier. Perhaps they should have included a silent running mode as well as a turbo mode. Some people have complained that the purifier is too loud, but everyone has their own tolerance levels.

External Causes of Air Pollution

The most common causes of external air pollution include:

  • Urban air pollution: Urban pollution in cities is on the rise due to a rise in the number of vehicles and a decrease in green cover. Air purifiers prevent this urban pollution from affecting your health by keeping it at bay and continuously filtering the environment.
  • Industrial smoke: Industries also produce pollution in the form of smoke which is regularly filtered out by air purifiers.
  • Wildfire smoke: Wildfire smoke is detected and handled by the various layers of filters.

Internal Causes of Air Pollution

Indoor air pollution might result from:

  • Cooking smoke: Do you wish you could get rid of those cooking odors after every meal? Let’s face it cooking fish or frying anything always leaves that lingering odor even in your hair and clothing. Simple homely activities like cooking produce smoke which gets trapped inside the house.

Cigarette, cigar and weed smoke: Cigarettes and cigars are a leading cause of indoor air pollution. They leave behind a strong stench which is handled by the odor reduction filters
